The RAV4 nearly aces crash testing and comes standard with a particularly good array of driver-assistance tech. The RAV4’s cabin is just as busy as its exterior, though it’s well-equipped if light on head room. Prime models may qualify for some tax breaks, too. Grab the RAV4 Prime-if you can find one-and you’ll find that 60 mph arrives in less than 6.0 seconds, plus you’ll have 42 miles of all-electric commuting.īase RAV4s still average somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 mpg combined, which isn’t too bad. The hybrid powertrain is the gem of this lineup, with better acceleration matched to improved fuel economy, too. Crisp lines, squared-off wheel wells, and plenty of contrasting trim give the RAV4 a decidedly rugged appearance. Other than that, I have been very pleased.Carried over are the rakish good looks that have helped catapult the RAV4 to the top sales position in the U.S. The things that annoy me include visible distortion in the windshield on the passenger side, and the outside mirrors jiggle noticeably on rough roads and bumps. The driver's seat is very comfortable and I look forward to going places sometime soon. However, the 2020 Hybrid has a very smooth ride, is noticeably quieter than the previous design, with noticeable increase in structural rigidity. I did try out a 2019 non-hybrid XLE premium when they first came out and agreed with the critics. Since the reviews of the first model year, 2019, had some complaints about the ride and engine noise, I figured I'd give Toyota at least one model year to fix the bugs. I expect that to improve with more break-in miles.
On my last fill-up, which was mostly in town driving, I got just over 36 mpg. Since I purchased it just before the pandemic hit, I haven't been able to put as many miles on it as I would like, currently just over 700.
Overall, I am very pleased with the new Rav4 Hybrid.
